Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has provided ₦1.5 billion in financial support to communities affected by severe flooding in Niger and Adamawa states. The gesture was part of her Renewed Hope Initiative, aimed at assisting vulnerable Nigerians.

During a visit to Niger State on Tuesday, Mrs Tinubu pledged ₦1 billion in aid and delivered 2,000 bags of rice, clothing, and footwear to victims of flooding, banditry, boat accidents, and fire disasters. Her visit came shortly after President Bola Tinubu’s ₦2 billion relief intervention for Mokwa Local Government Area, which recently suffered heavy flood damage.

On the same day in Adamawa, the First Lady — represented by Nana Shettima, wife of the Vice President — presented ₦500 million to flood victims and launched a ₦1 billion national women’s empowerment programme, targeting 500 beneficiaries in each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Speaking at the Government House in Minna, Mrs Tinubu said the relief funds should be channelled towards rebuilding homes and providing essential supplies to help displaced families recover. She expressed condolences to victims of recent disasters in Niger, including the Mokwa flood, bandit attacks, a major fire incident, and a fatal boat mishap.

“These are difficult times,” she said. “May God comfort those who have lost loved ones, heal the injured, and strengthen every affected family. As a mother, I share your pain and believe we can all unite to bring relief to our communities.”

Governor Umaru Bago described the First Lady’s intervention as timely, noting Niger’s unique vulnerability as the only riverine state in northern Nigeria, with four hydroelectric dams and two waterfalls. He revealed that the ₦1 billion support fund had already been deposited into the state’s emergency account, alongside the delivery of 16,000 wrappers for women, over 100 pairs of shoes, and the 2,000 bags of rice.

“We are deeply grateful,” Bago said. “We pray that God replenishes all you have given to he

lp our people.
