A legal representative of Omoyele Sowore, the political activist and former presidential aspirant, has raised serious concerns over his client’s treatment while in police custody.

Sowore was reportedly arrested on Wednesday after responding to an invitation by the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit.

In a statement released on Thursday, his lawyer, Tope Temokun, claimed that Sowore was transferred from police detention to an undisclosed site during the early hours of Thursday, sustaining injuries in the process.

According to Temokun, Sowore's right arm was badly hurt during what he described as a rough and violent transfer. He also alleged that a harmful substance, suspected to be a toxic gas, was released into the activist’s holding cell shortly before the relocation.

The statement, titled “Police Action Against Sowore is a Disguised Murder Plot”, strongly criticized the handling of the case.

“In his usual respectful manner, Sowore honoured the police invitation on August 6, 2025. But instead of a lawful process, he was met with actions reminiscent of military-era oppression where state power is abused,” the statement read.

Temokun likened the incident to past mistreatment of prominent political figures such as the late Gani Fawehinmi and Chief Moshood Abiola, who were also allegedly exposed to inhumane conditions during their detentions.

He characterized the actions against Sowore as a deliberate effort to harm or silence him under the guise of lawful procedure.
