The Federal Government has given its full backing to the rebranding of 9mobile as T2, describing the move as a significant leap for Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.

This transition is part of T2’s strategy to strengthen its presence in a highly competitive market. It comes alongside a notable three-year national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria, which will widen T2’s coverage and improve service delivery to customers.

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, said the brand unveiling demonstrates how far Nigeria’s telecom sector has progressed and reflects its readiness for future innovation and expansion.

He commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for laying a strong foundation through progressive policies, investor-friendly reforms, and large-scale infrastructure projects such as Project Bridge, a 90,000-kilometre fibre network, and the rollout of 7,000 rural telecom sites. These initiatives aim to connect over 20 million underserved Nigerians and expand affordable digital access nationwide.

“A strong and sustainable telecom sector draws more private investment. When combined with the government’s infrastructure rollout, the result will be better service quality and progress toward universal, affordable connectivity for all Nigerians,” Tijani stated.

Over the last two decades, Nigeria’s telecom operators have connected more than 220 million mobile lines, boosted broadband penetration to nearly 50% of the population, and attracted over $75 billion in investments.

According to Tijani, the collaboration between private companies and government-led projects will deepen the digital economy and could raise its GDP contribution to over 20% within the next two to five years.

He added that the launch of T2 reflects renewed investor confidence and signals a future of stronger competition, innovation, and inclusion in Nigeria’s telecom industry.

“Nigeria’s most promising digital era is yet to come, and together, we are building it,” the Minister concluded, congratulating the T2 leadership on the milestone.
