Sowore to Honour Police Invitation Over Undisclosed Petition, Mobilises Supporters
Omoyele Sowore, 2023 AAC presidential candidate and Sahara Reporters publisher, will honour an invitation from the IGP Monitoring Unit in Abuja on Wednesday regarding a petition against him. Although the police have refused to provide the petition details beforehand, they assured it would be given during the interview. Sowore alleges a hidden agenda but says he will attend with supporters and fellow activists.
Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, announced on Tuesday that he will attend an invitation from the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit in Abuja on Wednesday.
In a statement sent to our correspondent via WhatsApp, the Sahara Reporters publisher confirmed his decision to honour the meeting, despite expressing concerns about the process.
Earlier the same day, Sowore had written to the IGP Monitoring Unit requesting details of the petition filed against him and the identity of the complainant. The police responded by directing him to appear in person, assuring that the petition would be presented to him during the meeting in accordance with standard investigative procedures.
A letter signed by DCP Akin Fakorede, Head of the IGP Monitoring Unit, and addressed to his legal team, Tope Temokun Chambers, indicated that the interview had been rescheduled for August 6, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. The police reiterated that Sowore would receive a copy of the petition during the session.
In his Tuesday statement, Sowore criticized the refusal to release the petition beforehand and suggested there might be a hidden agenda.
“Although I have not been given the so-called petition against me, I will still attend tomorrow’s meeting. But I won’t be going alone. I will be accompanied by fellow activists and citizens who stand for justice. Let’s gather early at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja,” he declared.
