Crystal Palace stunned football fans at Wembley on Sunday, defeating reigning Premier League champions Liverpool on penalties to capture the 2025 FA Community Shield.
The contest finished 2–2 in normal time before Palace triumphed 3–2 in the shootout.
Liverpool took the lead just four minutes in, with new signing Hugo Ekitike slotting home after a pass from Florian Wirtz. The advantage didn’t last long — Virgil van Dijk’s foul on Ismaila Sarr gifted Palace a penalty, which Jean-Philippe Mateta converted.
Liverpool regained the lead in the 21st minute when Jeremie Frimpong’s looping cross sneaked in off the post. But Palace struck back late, with Sarr firing home in the 77th minute to level the score and send the match to penalties.
In the shootout, Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson proved decisive, denying Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott after Mohamed Salah had missed Liverpool’s first attempt. Substitute Justin Devenny then coolly converted the winning kick, sparking jubilant celebrations.
The victory adds another Wembley success for manager Oliver Glasner, coming just months after guiding Palace to their first-ever FA Cup
triumph.
